Meatco eases communal farmers’ access to livestock market

05 Feb 2021

The Meat Corporation of Namibia (Meatco), through the Meatco Foundation, the Norwegian group, UNIL and Global Protein Solutions (GPS) is mandated to serve, promote and coordinate the interests of the livestock producers in Namibia and strive for the stabilisation of the country’s meat industry in the national interest.

In this endeavour, in 2020, Meatco invested in the upgrading of the Gam settlement kraals to enable farmers to market their cattle for direct slaughter at the Meatco Export Abattoir, as per the standards set by our trading partners, especially the European Union (EU) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

This implies that animals marketed at the EU-compliant kraals qualify for direct slaughter at an export-certified abattoir, which improves efficiency and direct benefits to the farmers in the communal areas south of the Veterinary Cordon Fence.

The inauguration of the kraals will take place on 9 February 2021 at the Gam Main Settlement water point, opposite the councillor’s office or the Directorate of Veterinary Services office (DVS).
