03 Aug 2018

On 28 July 2018, Nedbank Namibia in partnership with MeatMa, Namibia Chefs Association (NamChefs), Namib Mills and Pick n Pay hosted the Central Region’s Kapana Cook-off in Windhoek at the Black Chain Shopping Complex in Katutura.

Sixty-seven contestants battled it out in the Entry Level Category.

Judges assessed cleanliness of the workstations, dish presentation, hygiene, knife skills and onion and tomato size precision.

The ten best contestants were chosen to compete in the Kapana braai where the top five contestants qualified through to the final round.

Six contestants entered the Professional Chefs Category, of which the top three made it through to the finals.

The contestants had 30 minutes to prepare their salsa and braai meat, and were judged on the handling of the fire in addition to the above-mentioned rules.

The winner of the Entry Level Category will receive a fully-fledged Kapana container shop along with a Nedbank bank account with an N$15.000 cash balance.

They will also receive a MeatMa shopping voucher worth N$5.000 and Small Medium Enterprise training and mentorship assistance.

The winner in the Professional Category will walk away with N$10.000.

According to Wholesale Manager, Martina Krӧller, the professionalism and organisation of the setup and the event has come to show the way it has grown into perfection.

“It is good to see the huge interest in contestants from the Windhoek area as well as their engagement and skills displayed.

“Working with the other sponsors who are experts on various platforms has attracted the public's attention and fostered a successful event," Krӧller said.

At the event, NamChefs President, Sanet Prinsloo, shared how the competition started small, four years ago and thanked each and every contestant who took part in the central area competition.

“This remains one fantastic event that promotes local competition and community empowerment,” Prinsloo said.
