The importance of an AGM

08 Jun 2018

It is annual general meeting season – the time of the year when most companies gather to report to stakeholders and have conversations with them.

Meatco is no different, as it will be hosting its 32nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Friday, 22 June 2018 at 09:00 at the Wanderers Sports Club in Windhoek.

As per section 14 (2) of the MEAT CORPORATION OF NAMIBIA ACT, 2001, annual general meetings of members shall be held within five months after the end of each financial year of the Corporation at such date, time and venue as the Board may determine.

An AGM is a key medium used by companies to disclose information to stakeholders.

Material information such as financial reports and audits are discussed during such meetings, giving stakeholders a chance to get more "credible" information so that they can take informed decisions.

Therefore, the main purpose of an AGM is to comply with legal requirements, including the presentation and approval of audited accounts and other pending issues.

Other items that may be discussed include compensation of directors, informing the members of future activities and any other issues raised by the stakeholders.

At the AGM, the chairperson of the organisation presides over the meeting and may also give an overall status of the organisation.

Members are encouraged to attend AGMs after comprehending the company's previous and current annual report so that they are in a position to discuss the critical emerging issues about the company from an informed perspective.

If all stakeholders, including directors, regulators, and the members play their roles, then we will be able to build stronger businesses that are sustainable and add value to the growth of our economy.

Producers that have delivered at least one head of livestock to Meatco via our abattoirs, feedlots, permit days or the Mobile Slaughter Unit (MSU) in the past five years, qualify for membership and are invited to attend the AGM.

All producers who were Meatco members as at 30 June 2013 are also invited to attend the AGM on 22 June 2018.

The deadline for submission of motions was 01 June 2018 at 12h00.
