  Facilities - Northern Communal Abattoirs

In the area north of the Veterinary Cordon Fence (VCF), known as the Northern Communal Areas, Meatco manages two cattle abattoirs on behalf of the Government of Namibia. Meatco has made significant investments in these two abattoirs over the past few years in order to stimulate commercial cattle rearing in the area which in turn provides an economic boost for the region.  The area has a different veterinary status than the commercial areas south of the VCF and as such has limited export opportunities.

The Oshakati Factory

The Oshakati factory was commissioned in 1976 and is built for export status. However, the animal health status of the region, north of the Veterinary Cordon Fence (VCF), inhibits exports to countries other than South Africa. The factory is HACCP and ISO 9001 certified and is operated and maintained at the same world class levels those south of the VCF.

The Oshakati Factory employs 110 people and has the capacity to slaughter 160 cattle every second day.

The Katima Factory

The Katima Factory is located in the Northern Communal Areas and has the capacity to slaughter 90 -120 cattle per day. It produces apporximately 2 300 tonnes of meat cuts annually which are mainly exported to South Africa and sold locally. The factory also produces around 15 000 tonnes of hides and 650 tonnes of offal per annum. The Katima Factory is ISO 9001 and HACCP certified and employs 62 people. It has has the capacity to slaughter 110 cattle every second day.
