Meatco is a responsible corporate citizen of Namibia and focuses its social investment in the agricultural sector as well as in community development projects in areas where its business units are situated. Meatco's Corporate Social Responsibility Programme includes sponsorships of various activities organised by Farmers Associations countrywide, a bursary scheme for orphans, administered by the University of Namibia; sponsorships to orphanages and practical training for students at vocational training centres in Windhoek.
In accordance with its social responsibilities Meatco acts in the long-term interest of its communal, emerging and commercial producers. In this respect, various programs have been put into place to educate communal producers about the benefits of producing on a commercial basis. Poverty is a big concern in the Northern Communal Areas of Namibia and studies have shown that if the commercial livestock potential of the area were unlocked it would mean an economic boost to the region of about N$1 billion.
Meatco takes care of its producers and has over the last couple of years consistently paid higher prices than neighbouring Southern African counterparts.
Meatco is also committed to preserving the pristine and natural environment in which it operates. The company aims to minimise its waist output and utilisation of natural resources. The core of Meatco’s business is the production of Free Range beef, that promotes natural livestock rearing without the use of growth hormones and antibiotics. This method of livestock rearing has a significantly lower impact on the environment than conventional livestock rearing methods in other livestock producing countries and regards animal welfare as a top priority. |
