Meatco operates three plants situated in central Namibia. The abattoirs in Windhoek and Okahandja enjoy European Union export status and are regularly inspected by EU inspectors. The Okapuka tannery situated between Windhoek and Okahandja processes the hides from the two abattoirs into export-quality leather products.
Although the Meatco abattoirs in the northern towns of Oshakati and Katima Mulilo have been awarded export status, their main focus remains the local and South African markets.
All Meatco facilities resort under the legislative power of the Namibian Directorate of Veterinary Services, which falls under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The Directorate is responsible for the maintenance of international regulations both in the field and the abattoirs. Regular abattoir inspections are thus carried out in order to comply with national regulations as well as those of importing countries. Meatco's quality control staff are committed to ensuring that all products comply with standards and regulations on cut, trim and weight as well as ensuring that the products meet the bacteriological standards required. The staff undergo regular medical tests in compliance with the relevant legislation.
