Members to nominate new Board

Meatco members, i.e. livestock producers delivering to Meatco who have registered as members, will once again be able to exercise their right to nominate Directors for the new Meatco Board.

The tenure of the current Meatco Board comes to an end this year and as per the Meatco Act, 2001 (Act 1 of 2001) only Meatco members are allowed to nominate candidates representing the Commercial Producers, the Communal Producers and two Specialist positions on the Board.

Nomination forms can be downloaded here and should be completed and delivered to Meatco’s Head Office in Windhoek on 14 June 2013 before 16h00.

Only Meatco members can serve in the positions mentioned above, but an employee representative and a Government representative will also be appointed to the Board.

New 40 day residency rule

Meatco received an internal memorandum and a circular from the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry (MAWF) the morning of 04 February 2013, amending the 40 days residency requirements with immediate effect.

The new requirements require, among other things, that EU-approved cattle and non-EU approved cattle may not come into contact with one another. If this should happen, the EU-approved animal will lose its status as EU-approved and will effectively become a non-EU approved animal. The result Tuesday was that all the animals at the Windhoek-factory immediately lost their EU-approved status.

There is still a lot of uncertainty surrounding the new requirements. Various industry stakeholders are meeting next week to sort out some of these uncertainties. In the meantime the NAU sent out a special newsletter with the content of the MAWF’s circular. It can be downloaded here.

The original memorandum and circular is also available for download at the following links: memorandum, circular.

Producers call for revised Cabinet decision

Sgm

During a General Meeting of Members held on Friday, 03 August 2012, livestock producers delivering to Meatco said that they were not happy with Government's decision to take 30% shareholding in the company as well as veto rights on any major decisions. They also stated that Namibian livestock producers can ill afford a 30% discount on their prices.
